Kim Frankowiak
Kim is the founder and beating heart of SAM. After pursuing a career in engineering and multinational mining project management, Kim studied microbiology at Curtin University and developed an interest for soil science and regenerative agriculture. This interest lead Kim to acquire small worm farm from his local council in 2007; however, before long this interest grew into a passion.
Unfortunately, Kim found that conventional composting and worm farming instructions simply were not producing the results he desired. Only through a great deal of research, trial and error, was Kim able to develop a first-hand, practical understanding of what it takes to make composting and worm farming systems thrive.
Kim was amazed at the tremendous improvements in plant resilience, soil fertility and also taste of produce that he was growing due to the application of worm castings and liquid fertiliser. He was also overjoyed to find that applying the worms’ liquid fertiliser to his backyard turf promoted regrowth and a resilience to the harsh West Australian sun.
It was through this long personal journey, that Kim became the avid vermiculturalist that he is today.
Kim's Work Through SAM
Through SAM Kim has assisted countless individuals with their own personal worm farms and composting systems, troubleshooting and educating them on how they can achieve greater results. Additionally, Kim produces compost and vermicultural products on a commercial scale for both residential and commercial use.
Community is also a large part of Kim‘s work at SAM. Kim has conducted many workshops demonstrations and presentations at schools, childcare centres, community gardens, local councils and agricultural events. He has also consulted for and contributed to the success of several community gardens. In fact, in 2015, Kim was given an environmental award by the city of Vincent for his contribution to sustainable practices
